Jane Goodall had no degree when sent by Louis Leaky to study the wild chimpanzees at Gombe.  After years of research she became the world’s expert on wild chimpanzees, earned a PhD from Cambridge University and became a United Nations Messenger of Peace, founded the Jane Goodall Institute Nonhuman Rights Project, was named Dame Commander of the order of the British Empire.  She was also awarded the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement, the French Legion of Honor, Japan’s Kyoto Prize, and other honors too numerous to name.

She is one of Louis Leakey’s “Angels” – the Trimates, including Dian Fossey (who studied gorillas before she was murdered in Uganda) and Birute Galadikas, who studied orangutans.
